Ingredients in a Duck Fart Shot
- Coffee Liqueur such as Kahlua.
- Irish Cream Liqueur such as Bailey’s Irish Cream.
- Whiskey such as Crown Royal.
History
The Duck Fart shot was created at a bar called the Peanut Farm in Anchorage, Alaska. According to Anchorage Press, the shot was first made by bartender Dave Schmidt in December 1987. The story says that a 70-year-old woman came in and sat at the bar, because it was a slow night she was testing new drink combinations. When the older woman tried this drink, she suddenly burped- making a sound they thought sounded like a duck fart. That is how the Duck Fart shot get it’s name.
You may be curious- what does a Duck Fart shot taste like? Good question. Flavors of coffee, cream and whiskey combine for this pleasant layered shot. The world-famous Alaskan Duck Fart Shot is a sweet and smooth coffee flavored shot.

How to Make
In a shot glass begin by pouring a layer of coffee liqueur as the bottom layer.
Next, using a kitchen spoon or a bar spoon slowly pour a layer of Irish Cream liqueur. The Bailey’s floats above the Kahlua.
Last, gently pour a layer of whiskey for the final layer.

Tips for Making
- Layered shots take practice to achieve clean, undisturbed layers. The results are beautiful and worth the effort. It helps to pour from a shot glass or measuring glass rather than a bottle. Using the back of a spoon can help to slow the pour even more. Of course if you don’t care about aesthetics you can throw caution to the wind and pour straight from the bottle.
- You may double the recipe and serve it in a short cocktail glass as a Duck Fart drink. Personally, I find this recipe best served as a shot.
- B52 vs Duck Fart- you may be curious what the difference it between a B52 shot and a Duck Fart shot. A B52 uses Grand Marnier (orange flavored liqueur) where a Duck Fart uses Whiskey.
