The Cosmo is made with vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice and fresh lime juice. This fun, pink drink became famous from HBO’s Sex and the City. The Cosmo is tart, fresh and not too sweet. It’s the perfect drink to serve at dinner parties and girls’ nights.

History of in the Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe

The modern day Cosmo is a variation of the 1930s cocktail called Cosmopolitan 1934 which was made using gin, Cointreau, lemon juice and raspberry syrup.

According to Gary Regan, the Cosmopolitan as we know it today was first mixed in 1985 by Miami bartender, Cheryl Cook. At the time Cook was working at a South Beach bar called The Strand. She created the Cosmopolitan as a variation of the Kamikaze with an added splash of cranberry juice.

Others believe the Cosmo was invented by Dale DeGroff at New York City’s Rainbow Room. Still other’s say it was first mixed by bartender Toby Cecchini in the late 1980s. Cecchini mixed his cosmo with Absolut Citron vodka, a citrus flavored vodka along with cranberry juice, orange liqueur and lime juice.

The drink became staple for New York City sophistication thanks to Sex and the City‘s Carrie Bradshaw in the 1990s. It has remained extremely popular ever since.

Ingredients in the Classic Cosmopolitan Cocktail

  • Vodka Choose unflavored or citrus flavored vodka.
  • Orange Liqueur Such as Cointreau, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier.
  • Cranberry Juice Cranberry Juice Cocktail (not 100% cranberry juice)
  • Lime Juice freshly squeezed.
  • Orange Peel (optional) for garnish

You can use any brand of vodka you prefer for this cocktail. We recommend a top shelf vodka such as Grey Goose.

How to make a Cosmopolitan

In a cocktail shaker with ice, add the vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice and lime juice.

Shake until the shaker feels very cold in your hands or 10-15 seconds.

Strain into a martini glass or coupe glass and garnish with an orange peel.

Orange Twist Garnish

And here’s how I make those little orange spirals. You can buy a fancy peeler or a potato peeler to scrape off a large piece of orange peel, and then simply use my kitchen shears to cut strips and curl them.

Tips for Making

  • Chilled Cocktail Glass A chilled cocktail glass elevates any cocktail. Place your glass in the freezer for 30 minutes to 2 hours before you serve your drink.
  • Simple Syrup If this recipe is too stiff for you try adding half an ounce to one ounce of simple syrup before shaking.
  • White Cosmo A popular variation of the cosmo is the White Cosmo. Swap St-Germain in place of orange liqueur to try make your own.

Dirty Martini https://abeautifulmess.com/dirty-martini/ https://abeautifulmess.com/dirty-martini/#comments Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=123541 There are few drinks more classic than a dirty martini. The simple combination of gin (or vodka!), dry vermouth, and olive brine packs a punch that’s been adorning cocktail tables for decades. And of course, don’t forget the olive garnish!

Whether you use vodka or gin, this easy to make drink is a top choice for the savory cocktail lover and we’ve got a video to show you exactly how to do it.

Do you use gin or vodka for a dirty martini?

While gin is more commonly used for a dirty martini, it’s up to your personal preference to use vodka or gin as your base. The more subtle flavors of a vodka-based version allows the olive brine to rise to the front over the gin’s stronger botanical flavor.

What makes a dirty martini dirty?

The difference between a regular martini and a dirty one is that the dirty version has olive brine from a jar of olives added to the drink for an extra punch and usually a skewer of cocktail olives for a garnish. You can even up the amount of brine to go from a dirty martini to an “extra dirty” or “filthy” version.

dirty martini ingredients

Ingredients

  • Gin: Try out different gins to find your favorite for a dirty martini, some enjoy less juniper forward choices like Hendrick’s or Aviation over heavier flavors like Beefeater or Tanqueray.
  • Dry Vermouth: You’ll want to choose a dry vermouth for a dirty martini. Just a splash of it adds a note of tartness to help balance out the gin or vodka taste.
  • Olive Brine: The brine adds salt to the cocktail which enhances the flavors of the vermouth and the natural oils from the olives add a buttery mouth feel to the drink.
  • Cocktail Olives: What’s a dirty martini without a garnish of cocktail olives? Add a few jumbo olives to a skewer and you’ll also have a little built in snack to nosh on while you drink.

A dirty martini is best served in a classic martini glass and you can also do a stemless version for a different look.

making a dirty martini

Directions

Add your gin (or vodka), dry vermouth, and olive brine to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Give the shaker a good shake for about 15 seconds and use a strainer to pour your drink into a chilled martini glass (if you don’t have a separate strainer you can just use the strainer top of the shaker).

Add a garnish of olives on a cocktail stick and your drink is ready to go!

Tips for Making a Dirty Martini

  • Make sure your glass is chilled and your martini is ice cold! This is definitely a drink where temperature affects the taste, so go the extra mile to chill the glass to keep it cold.
  • For extra olive flavor, you can muddle olives into the drink before straining, or add extra brine for a heavier olive taste.
  • To make the perfect dirty martini for you, play around with the ratios of gin or vodka and vermouth until you find the sweet spot for your taste level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you chill a glass quickly?

If you don’t have time to chill your glass, simply fill the empty glass with ice and allow the glass to chill while you make your drink. Pour out the ice and add your cocktail when ready!

What’s the difference between a shaken and stirred martini?

While James Bond prefers his martini shaken not stirred, the main difference between the methods is that shaking the martini will add a few tiny ice chips to your drink. So if you don’t want it watered down at all, try stirring the drink instead of shaking before pouring into your glass.

Grasshopper Cocktail https://abeautifulmess.com/grasshopper-cocktail/ https://abeautifulmess.com/grasshopper-cocktail/#comments Sat, 27 Dec 2025 14:05:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=81636 The grasshopper cocktail is a classic drink that tastes like an after-dinner mint with its delicious creamy combination of mint and chocolate. The drink’s vibrant green color (thanks to the crème de menthe) makes it perfect for a Christmas holiday party or St. Patrick’s Day, but it can really be enjoyed any time of year.

The grasshopper drink is easy to make, so you can get your party cocktails together in a snap. Most recipes call for an equal parts crème de menthe and crème de cacao and you can play around with the cream proportion if you like to find the right balance for your taste. Try a pink squirrel for a cherry version of this drink!

grasshopper drink cocktail

What does a grasshopper cocktail taste like?

With its combination of mint, chocolate, and heavy cream, this after-dinner drink tastes like an Andes mint in liquid form. It’s basically a dessert you can drink as it has the flavor of melted mint chocolate chip ice cream.

What’s the origin of the grasshopper drink?

While the origin of the grasshopper cocktail recipe is unclear, the most popular story says that Philibert Guichet, owner of the New Orleans eatery Tujague’s, created the drink for a 1918 New York city cocktail competition (which won him second place). There is a mention of a drink from a 1907 cocktail book that layers crème de menthe and crème de cacao, so Prohibition caused the drink to fall out of fashion for a while but by the ’70s the drink was widely popular again.

grasshopper drink cocktail ingredients

Ingredients for a Grasshopper Cocktail:

Crème de menthe: The vibrant green crème de menthe is what gives this cocktail its amazing color and mint flavors.

Crème de cacao: This white liqueur brings the chocolate note to the drink with its buttery mouthfeel and sweet cacao profile.

Heavy cream: This is what gives the grasshopper its thick and creamy base and gives it that dessert-in-a-glass decadence. You can also use half-and half as a slightly less rich option.

While you can use any glass for a grasshopper, it’s traditionally served in a coupe style or martini glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use milk for a grasshopper instead of heavy cream?

While heavy cream creates the creamiest version of a grasshopper, milk can be used in a pinch or if you find the heavy cream too rich for your liking. A higher fat content milk (like a whole milk) will create a creamier drink than a lower fat option like skim or 1% milk.

How to Make a Grasshopper Drink:

COMBINE your creme de menthe, white creme de cacao, and heavy cream in a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes.

SHAKE your cocktail in the shaker until fully chilled.

STRAIN your drink into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with mint leaves and chocolate shavings if desired.

How to Make a Frozen Grasshopper:

A frozen grasshopper cocktail is quite possibly the most delicious boozy milkshake option ever. To make this, you simply swap the 1 ounce of heavy whipping cream for 1 cup of vanilla ice cream and blend in a blender until just smooth with the perfect milkshake consistency.

As you can tell from the ingredients, this is a very decadent and flavorful drink. Perfect for a holiday celebration!

Other Grasshopper Drink Variations:

Flying Grasshopper: While the recipe for a Flying Grasshopper varies a bit, you make the drink “flying” by adding an once of vodka either in addition to the regular ingredients, or as a substitution for the heavy cream. Try using vanilla vodka for an added note of vanilla!

Irish Grasshopper: Try adding a shot of Irish cream to the original recipe for a delicious St. Patrick’s Day twist.

Tips and tricks:

  • For a festive look, add a mini candy cane to the side of the glass.
  • Try garnishing with a few chocolate shavings (or chocolate sprinkles) and fresh mint.
  • Keep your glasses in the freezer before using for extra frosty containers.
  • For some extra chocolate taste, add chocolate sauce to the rim or drizzled inside the glass before pouring in your cocktail.
  • Try serving it at a Halloween party to make use of its fun green color and frothy tops.

Espresso Martini https://abeautifulmess.com/easy-espresso-martini/ https://abeautifulmess.com/easy-espresso-martini/#comments Fri, 26 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://staging.abeautifulmess.com/easy-espresso-martini-1 This recipe makes a classic Espresso Martini. It’s the perfect after-dinner drink or dessert cocktail. It’s tastes strong, balanced and has a creamy, foamy top. If you love coffee cocktails, you have to try this recipe. This recipe is the perfect marriage of cocktail and coffee. With only three ingredients, this drink is easier to make than it looks.

In this recipe, simple ingredients combine to create something magical. Espresso flavors meld with flavors of strong coffee balanced by sweetness.

Looking For More Espresso-Flavored Recipes?

Before making your espresso martini, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, you will want to use espresso instead of brewing coffee or using instant coffee. It’s important for the flavor profile.

Next, it’s important to let the espresso chill before adding it to the ice and alcohol so that it does not melt the ice.

The foam is an important part of this cocktail, both for flavor and presentation. It’s kind of like when you order a latte, the more foam the better! The foam comes from shaking in a cocktail shaker for 10-15 seconds.

Espresso Martini Ingredients

  • Espresso – 1 shot (about 1.5 ounces) espresso
  • Vodka – 2 ounces vodka
  • Kahlúa – 1/2 ounce coffee liqueur
  • Simple Syrup – 1/2 ounce simple syrup (this is optional but I recommend it)
  • Coffee Beans – For garnish

This will make one drink. You can easily make two servings in the same shaker by doubling the ingredients. The best cocktail glass to serve an Espresso Martini in is a martini glass or a coupe glass. You will also need a cocktail shaker to make this recipe. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, a jar can be used.

Espresso Martini Recipe

  1. Make your espresso and allow to cool (otherwise, it will melt your ice). If you’re in a hurry, you can put it in the refrigerator.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and pour in the espresso, vodka, Kahlua and simple syrup (optional).
  3. Shake until chilled. This will also create the froth for foam.
  4. Strain and pour into a chilled glass.
  5. Garnish with a few coffee beans.

Bonus points if you chill your martini glasses in the freezer ahead of time.

Tips for Making

  • Substitutions – If you don’t have a way to make fresh espresso cold brew, concentrate is an acceptable substitution.
  • Variations – You may swap unflavored vodka for vanilla vodka, or a seasonal flavor such as caramel, pecan, pumpkin or peppermint. While some would consider this sacrilegious, we would point out that the Espresso Martini isn’t technically a true martini and so if you enjoy seasonal coffee drinks, why not?
  • Sweetness – The simple syrup (sugar syrup) is technically optional, but we find it essential to creating balance between strong and bitter flavors.
  • Garnish Ideas – In addition to coffee or espresso beans, many bartenders like to dust the top of the martini foam with espresso powder.

History

The Espresso Martini was created in 1983 by bartender Dick Bradsell at Fred’s Club, a bar in London. It continued to gain popularity throughout 1980s and more recently had a second resurgence. The famous tale says that Bradsell was asked by a famous model of the era to make a cocktail that would “wake me up and fuck me up.” And so the Espresso Martini was born. Bradsell is also famous for creating the Bramble cocktail.

Home Espresso Makers

We’ve tried many espresso makers over the years, and here are our favorites at different price points and skill levels:

  • Cafe Automatic Espresso Machine – My current machine. It uses any whole beans, so if you use high quality beans you’ll get high quality espresso. It makes espresso shots automatically (no barista skills required) and includes a milk frothing wand to heat and froth milk. We’ve used this machine almost every day since we got it seven months ago and we love it! It comes in three colors.
  • Breville Barista Touch – We bought this for a good friend as a wedding gift once and they said they love it. It’s a higher end machine that you will need some barista skills to operate, but it’s an excellent home espresso maker.
  • Nespresso Vertuo – For those who want an espresso maker that uses pods, this is my favorite. Depending what pod you use, it can make espresso or coffee.
  • MiniPresso – This machine will make you a single shot of espresso by adding boiling water into one end, your grinds into the other, and then you pump a button that pops out.
  • French Press – It’s also possible to make espresso in your French press.

Not only is this espresso martini delicious, but it can be a great conversation starter. I know I’m a little bit more talkative when I have a little jolt of caffeine in my system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vodka is best for an espresso martini?

I like to choose a mid-priced vodka such as Tito’s or Grey Goose. Very high end vodka is not necessary because the Kahlua is the top flavor in this recipe.

What are the ingredients in an espresso martini?

Espresso, vodka, coffee liquor and simple syrup. You can garnish with espresso beans (optional garnish).

Can I use Bailey’s for an espresso martini?

You can swap Kahlua for Bailey’s Irish Cream, but Kahlua is our top choice. Kahlua is more flavorful and creates a more rich, stiff cocktail. Bailey’s creates a creamer and less flavorful drink.

Other Martinis To Try:

Now you know how to make a classic espresso martini—perfect for coffee lovers! Guests will be super impressed by the chilled glasses and coffee bean garnish. It’s the little things, right? Happy cocktail making! xo. Emma

The creamy sherbet mixed with the fruity punch and fizzy soda only has three ingredients, takes just minutes to make, and creates a sweet treat that will be remembered all year round.

Green grinch christmas punch

What is Grinch Punch?

This Christmas punch gets its “Grinch” name from the green color of the character in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and while there are several variations on the flavor, it is usually a fruity green punch base often with sherbet added to the top. Sometimes alcohol is added but is usually non-alcoholic.

Green grinch christmas punch ingredients

Ingredients for Grinch Punch

  • Green Berry Rush Hawaiian Punch: This green version of the classic red Hawaiian punch is the perfect fruity base for the punch. Look for it in the juice aisle at the grocery store.
  • Lemon-Lime Soda: Sprite or 7Up-type sodas are the best choices for this punch. You could use ginger ale in a pinch but the more neutral Sprite and 7Up flavors work best.
  • Lime sherbet: Lime sherbet adds a creamy element to the punch and it’s extra delicious when you get a scoop of it in your glass.
  • Red sanding sugar (optional): Add a red sugar rim for an extra festive look!

How to Make a Sugar Rim

To make a sugar rim, simply wet the rim of your glass (either with a wet clean finger or dip it in a bowl with a shallow amount of water) and press it into red sanding sugar that you’ve poured onto a plate. Easy and pretty!

How to make Grinch Punch

  • Pour: Pour half your Hawaiian punch and half of your soda into your punch bowl and gently stir to combine.
  • Scoop: Scoop your sherbet into your punch bowl on top of your punch.
  • Serve: Ladle your punch into your cups and serve!

Tips for Making Grinch Punch:

  • Leave your sherbet out on the counter for 5-10 minutes before scooping if you want it to be soft enough to scoop more easily.
  • As the sherbet melts, the punch will get sweeter, so keep some extra punch ingredients on hand if you want to pour in a little more soda and juice later on to keep the balance just right.
  • Look for seasonal flavors of Sprite and 7Up (like cranberry around the holidays) to add another flavor twist on the classic.
  • Make sure your soda and juices are chilled before mixing so the punch will be nice and cold.
  • You can also add fresh fruit like orange or lime slices for additional color to the top of your punch bowl.
  • Try adding rum or vodka to make an adult Grinch punch!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead can I make Grinch punch?

Technically, you can add your punch ingredients (soda and Hawaiian Punch) to a bowl a few hours before the party and keep in your fridge until it’s time to add the sherbet and serve, but you will lose some soda fizziness by mixing it ahead of time. Ideally, it’s best to make right before serving.

Can you save leftover Grinch punch?

You can save leftover punch in the fridge in a closed container, but the fizziness of the soda will fade and the sherbet will fully melt, so it’s best enjoyed fresh.

Do I have to serve Grinch punch in a punch bowl?

No! You can also serve this in a pitcher although it can be hard to get scoops of sherbet into cups when pouring from a spout. If using a pitcher, consider scooping some extra sherbet into the cup so each person gets a scoop.

  • 5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

How to Make Gingerbread Cookies:

  1. Mix the flour, baking soda, salt and all spices. Set mixture aside.
  2. In your stand mixer bowl, combine butter and sugar and beat until mixture is fully combined—about 3 minutes. Scrape down sides if needed.
  3. Slowly add the molasses, egg and vinegar until fully combined. It’s normal for the mixture to appear curdled.
  4. Add the flour mixture slowly, scraping sides as needed. Be sure the bottom and top of your bowl are both fully combined. If the dough is crumbly, it is not fully mixed.
  5. Divide the dough into 3-5 flattened balls and cover in plastic wrap.
  6. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before rolling. Chilling is an essential step to create cutout shapes with nice edges. If you skip this step, your cookies may lose some shape while baking.
  7. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  8. Roll dough using as small amount of flour as necessary. I use parchment paper to roll if my dough is sticky at all. Dough should be about half an inch thick for a nice, soft cookie.
  9. Place cutout shapes on a parchment lined baking sheet. Gather and re-roll shapes as needed. You do not need to chill your dough again unless it becomes very soft.
  10. Bake cookies at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on pan for 5 minutes before transferring.
  11. Decorate your cookies as you like. I used this royal icing recipe. We also have a vegan royal icing recipe.

Tips for Making Gingerbread Cookies:

  • If you prefer crispy gingerbread, simply roll the dough thinner (1/4 inch) and bake for 12 minutes instead of 10.
  • You can use light or dark molasses, but do not use blackstrap or cooking molasses or your cookies will be bitter. I used the brand Grandma’s Original Molasses, which is easy to find in the U.S.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can you keep the dough refrigerated?

While the minimum time to chilling your dough is 30 minutes, there really is no maximum. You can keep your dough in the fridge for up to 3 days with no issues.

Can you freeze this dough?

Yes. This recipe makes a lot of dough, so if you aren’t able to use it within two to three days, freeze it for a future cookie session.

Salted Caramel Syrup https://abeautifulmess.com/salted-caramel-syrup/ https://abeautifulmess.com/salted-caramel-syrup/#comments Mon, 22 Dec 2025 14:30:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=142422 This is a Starbucks copycat recipe for their salted caramel syrup. This is a thinner simple syrup, perfect for mixing into coffee or other beverages; not a thick caramel syrup for topping ice cream or other desserts. If you are in need of a homemade salted caramel syrup for your morning coffee, a latte, a mocha or even to mix into a cocktail (like an Appletini) this is it!

This is the easiest homemade salted caramel syrup recipe you will find! I’ll show you how to use store-bought caramel sauce or caramel topping to make this simple syrup. If you prefer to make your own caramel sauce before beginning the recipe below feel free, but it’s not necessary for success.

Ingredients

  • Granulated white sugar
  • Water
  • Caramel sauce / topping
  • Sea salt

How to make Salted Caramel Syrup

In a small pan, combine the sugar and water. On medium heat, simmer together and stir until sugar is fully dissolved and there are no grains. Then stir in the caramel sauce, whisking until full dissolved.

Remove from heat and immediately stir in the salt.

Let cool and pour into an airtight container in the fridge.

Notes for Success

  • Do not boil simple syrup for more than the time it takes to dissolve. It you overcook your syrup it will eventually become caramel. We are aiming for caramel simple syrup, not caramel.
  • I recommend using sea salt for this recipe. It elevates it. Plus flaky sea salt is great for topping baked goods and many other uses. It’s worth it!

Snowball Cookies https://abeautifulmess.com/snowball-cookies/ https://abeautifulmess.com/snowball-cookies/#comments Sun, 21 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=99040 Snowball cookies are such a fun and delicious seasonal baking project. If you’ve never had them before, here’s what you need to know: They look like snowballs, they have a nutty buttery flavor, and they are melt-in-your-mouth amazing!

Snowball cookies go great with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. But look out, as they are shockingly addictive.

Related: Gingerbread Cookies, Butter Cookies, The Best Cookie Recipes

  • All-purpose flour
  • Pecans (or other nuts)
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar (confectioner’s sugar)

Directions:

Snowball cookies have three main steps for success. First, toast the nuts for maximum flavor. Then, make and bake the cookies.

Last, roll the still-warm cookies in powdered sugar for that snowball effect and melt-in-your-mouth flavor. I like to roll them once, and after I’ve rolled them all, I will roll each one more time for maximum snow effect!

Tips for Making:

  • Nuts – I like pecans, but sometimes snowball cookies are made with walnuts or other nuts. It’s up to your preference (or if allergies are an issue). Whatever nut you use, give them a good toasting before chopping them well.
  • Roll each dough ball so it’s a 2-3 bite cookie. These don’t bake for long, so you don’t necessarily want oversized cookies.
  • Roll the snowball cookies in powdered sugar while they are still warm, and then once more. The first layer will melt some (a good thing!), but for that snowy look, you’ll want a second layer.

Serving Suggestion – Coffee!

Snowball cookies go great with a hot beverage like coffee or tea (see our favorite herbal tea-it’s tastes like red hots candy!).

Here’s how to take your at-home coffee game to the next level:

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my snowball cookies turn out flat?

Snowball cookies should not flatten. Since they do not contain a leavening agent, the main factor to check is that the dough is chilled before baking.

Can snowball cookie dough be frozen?

Yes. You can freeze the dough in balls to bake later. Once they are baked, you can roll them in powdered sugar.

Are snowball cookies the same as Italian wedding cookies?

They are very similar cookies. Italian wedding cookies are sometimes made with different nuts (like almonds) and sometimes shaped into a crescent moon shape before baking.

Toffee Nut Syrup https://abeautifulmess.com/toffee-nut-syrup/ https://abeautifulmess.com/toffee-nut-syrup/#comments Sat, 20 Dec 2025 14:51:00 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=142347 Yes, this is a Starbucks copycat Toffee Nut Syrup recipe. Once upon a time getting toffee nut latte was one of my weekly indulgences. I love toffee (think Heath bar!). It’s such a cozy flavor to me. And this homemade toffee nut simple syrup boasts all those flavors—buttery, caramel goodness.

You can use this toffee nut syrup in all sorts of homemade drinks like coffee, lattes, sparkling water, soda (toffee nut Coke? yes, I’m interested) or in cocktails like a martini or old fashioned.

Related: Next up learn to make your own cinnamon dolce syrup or pumpkin spice syrup.

Ingredients

  • Brown Sugar
  • Granulated white sugar
  • Water
  • Toffee bits, or chopped up toffee bar

How to make Toffee Nut Syrup

In a small pan, combine the sugars and water. On medium heat, simmer together and stir until sugar is fully dissolved and there are no grains.

Then stir in the toffee bits. Simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Let cool and pour into an airtight container in the fridge.

Notes for Success

  • Do not boil simple syrup for more than the time it takes to dissolve. It you overcook your syrup it will eventually become caramel.
  • Any English toffee bar or bits will work well for this recipe.
  • This simple syrup will be thicker than plain simple syrup, this is because of the addition of brown sugar and the toffee bits. It still works great in drink recipes. I’m calling this out so you don’t think you made it wrong.

Peppermint Syrup https://abeautifulmess.com/peppermint-syrup/ https://abeautifulmess.com/peppermint-syrup/#comments Thu, 18 Dec 2025 15:31:43 +0000 https://abeautifulmess.com/?p=142360 Tis the season to learn to make your own peppermint syrup! This flavored simple syrup recipe could not be easier to make at home. You can use this peppermint syrup in many different recipes including coffee and lattes, cocktails, sparkling water or soda and even baked goods or desserts like drizzled over ice cream. One of my favorite seasonal drinks is a peppermint mocha!

While I use peppermint extract in this recipe (it’s the easiest option for any at home cook) if needed you could use peppermint candy or fresh peppermint instead. Keep in mind peppermint is a specific kind of mint. At most groceries the fresh mint you’ll find sold in the herb section is usually spearmint or sometimes thai mint. Peppermint has a stronger taste and tends to feel almost cooling.

Ingredients

  • Granulated white sugar
  • Water
  • Peppermint extract

How to Make Peppermint Syrup

In a small pan, combine the sugar and water. On medium heat, simmer together and stir until sugar is fully dissolved and there are no grains. Then stir in the peppermint extract

Do not boil simple syrup for more than the time it takes to dissolve. It you overcook your syrup it will eventually become caramel.

Let cool and pour into an airtight container in the fridge.

Notes & Substitutions

  • If you want to use peppermint candy (like candy canes) instead of extract simply add 1/4 cup candy pieces to the mixture after dissolving the sugar. Let simmer for 2-3 full minutes. Then allow the syrup to cool in the pan. Remove the candy pieces before storing the syrup.
  • If you want to use fresh peppermint instead of extract simply add 5-6 leaves to the mixture after dissolving the sugar. Let simmer for 2 full minutes. Then allow the syrup to cool in the pan. Remove the mint pieces before storing the syrup.
  • Peppermint simple syrup makes a great homemade gift option for any coffee lover in your life!
